ABOUT THE BOOK

Who wields the power behind the Wild Court?

After months of dealing with gods and monsters in New York, Karina and Robert return to their cottage in Scotland. Chris makes the move as well to start fresh with his girlfriend, Anya—but when they arrive Anya isn’t there. He tracks her down at the pub where her mother, Beira, works, and finds out that Beria’s been holding a grudge against his family for the past few hundred years. Since Beira’s the Cailleach Bheur— the Celtic Queen of Winter—her grudges are a rather big deal.

While Chris deals with Beira, Karina and Robert learn that when Robert was freed from the Minster’s Pine Karina inadvertently left a portal to Elphame open. Now Doon Hill is covered in fairies who are organizing themselves into a new court free of Seelie rule, akin to the Wild Fae of old. What’s worse, Karina’s long-lost uncle appears to be organizing this new court.

Karina closes the door to Elphame, but that only angers the unseen powers behind the fledgling Wild Court, forcing her and Robert to forge alliances with those who’d been their enemies not so long ago. Who can Karina and her gallowglass trust, and who is only out to deceive them?

 Who is hunting the gallowglass?

When Karina and Robert relocated from Scotland to New York, they expected things to settle down. New York is known for many things, but a hotbed of supernatural occurrences isn’t one of them. Karina returned to her life as a graduate student, and agreed to teach a class over winter break. That was when things got weird: first she and Robert encountered an angry centaur, then a fairy enrolled in her class, and Karina learned that her mentor just might be a deity. When the Seelie King started making unannounced visits to Karina’s apartment in the middle of the night and warning her and Robert to be careful, she knew things were serious. All of these events led to a single question: Who doesn’t want the gallowglass on American soil?

Meanwhile, Chris has problems of his own. The university grudgingly restored his teaching position, his agent and publisher are hounding him for a sequel to his worldwide bestseller… and he wonders if he can teach again. Write again. Hell, he can barely even speak to a woman after what happened between him and the Seelie Queen. Then a woman—a fairy woman—comes into Chris’s life, and damn it all if he doesn’t want her to stay there.

The god plays their hand, and the Seelie King calls Robert to his side. Alone and more frightened than she’s ever been, Karina tries to solve the mystery of who is hunting the gallowglass. Will Karina find the answer in time, or will Robert be lost forever?

Goals, 2018 Edition #WriterWednesday #Goals #CleanSlateTwoOhOneEight #amwriting #IARTG

Setting.

Here we are in 2018! Honestly, there were times when I didn't think 2017 would ever end, but here we are in a new year. And a new year means we get a whole new set of goals, and the plans to reach them.

The best part about goals is that when you have a solid and achievable end game the stops along the way can be fluid. For instance, let's say you have a goal of living a healthier lifestyle and getting in better shape. (Don't we all?) Your plan could be to lose 10 pounds, or eat more vegetables, or maybe train for a half marathon. Any of those plans will move you closer to your goal of being healthier, but it's up to you to choose the best path.

I have several goals for 2018; some are writing-related, some aren't, and I have a few for which the goal exists but the plan is still in the, uh, planning stages. Here they are, in no particular order (though the writing ones did end up first in the queue):
  1. Release the Gallowglass #3, Homecoming, and two or three tie-in short stories. Homecoming is scheduled for an early summer release.
  2. Golem, The Chronicles of Parthalan #4, will release this year. (Keep your eyes peeled for the cover reveal!) I have some housekeeping to do on that series, which means that the fifth installment, Elfsong, might get pushed back to 2019.
  3. Polish up my YA mermaid mystery and get it submission ready.
  4. Outline two other series that are currently in the idea stage.
  5. Attend as an author at least six live events. I had to scale things back A LOT toward the end of 2017, and I'm looking forward to getting out there and hanging out with readers and writers again.
  6. Complete phase 1 of Sekrit Nonfiction Project.
  7. In 2017 we had twelve new experiences with the Wonder Twins. It was such a success I’m listing that as a 2018 goal.
  8. FINALLY install my raised garden beds.
  9. Continue to prioritize wellness for myself and my family.
  10. HAVE FUN! My grandfather always said that you need to make your own fun, and he was right.
I’ll post updates throughout the year with goal progress, event and release dates, and maybe a few updates on the Sekrit Project. Next week, I’ll recap my 2017 goals—what worked, what didn’t, and what was a raging fiasco. Remember, a goal without a plan is just a wish!

What are your goals for 2018? Let us know in the comments, and we can cheer each other on!

Writer Wednesday: Cravings--Go On, Give In (To The Literary Ones, At Least) #WriterWednesday #craving #IARTG

Cravings generally get a bad rap. If you perform an internet search for cravings you'll get thousands of hits, the vast majority of them describing how to resist them, or how to end your cravings altogether. But, what if we as writers gave into them, at least occasionally?

Now, I'm not suggesting you go out and eat an entire cheesecake, as yummy as that would be. I'm talking about indulging your literary cravings.

What's a literary craving, you ask? Well, it's a desire to read a book-perhaps scandalous, perhaps not-that exists outside your literary comfort zone. It could be a vampire romance, a historical fiction, or even a comic book. In fact, comics are the inspiration behind this post.

We've all heard about the Marvel Cinematic Universe, right? A coworker of mine loves the movies, but craved more backstory on the characters. Since movies are expensive and therefore much rarer than your standard paper comic, I suggested she read a few back issues.

I kid you not, she was shocked when I suggested this. Her, a grown, respectable woman reading comic books? What would her coworkers think? As resistant as she initially was, she wanted to know more about Tony Stark and Steve Rodgers (and Miles Morales, after we had a particularly heated discussion on Spider Man). She downloaded a few collections for her Kindle, then a few more, and to make a long story short last year she cosplayed for the first time. AS MYSTIQUE. (She wouldn't let me include a picture, no matter what bribes I offered.)

Mystique

Now replace "comic book" in the above anecdote with whatever other genre you've been eyeing. I know so many people, both writers and readers, who rarely if ever stray from their comfort zones, and they really are doing themselves a disservice. After all, think about all the adults who took a chance on reading a children's book called Harry Potter.

I task all of you, dear readers, with reading one book your craving, be it a vampire romance or treatise on string theory. Have you recently read one of your cravings? Tell us about it in the comments!

As for me, I'll be over there with a slice of cheesecake.

After Karina and her brother, Chris’s, lives fall apart in separate yet equally spectacular ways, they leave New York behind and head to the UK. Karina buries herself in research for her doctoral thesis, all the while studiously not thinking about the man who broke her heart, while Chris—who’d been a best-selling author before his ex-fiancée sued him for plagiarism—drinks his way across the British Isles.

In Scotland, they visit the grave of Robert Kirk, a seventeenth- century minister who was kidnapped by fairies. No one is more shocked than Karina when a handsome man with a Scottish brogue appears, claiming to be the Robert Kirk of legend. What’s more, he says he spent the last few hundred years as the Gallowglass, the Seelie Queen’s personal assassin. When they’re attacked by demons, Karina understands how dearly the queen wants him back.

As Karina and Robert grow closer, Chris’s attempts to drown his sorrows lead him to a pub, and a woman called Sorcha. Chris is instantly smitten with her, so much so he spends days with Sorcha and lies to his sister about his whereabouts. When Chris comes home covered in fey kisses, Karina realizes that the Seelie Queen isn’t just after Robert.

Can Karina outsmart the Seelie Queen, or is Robert doomed to forever be the Gallowglass?

Writer Wednesday: Why I Write #amwriting #amreading #mythology #legends #Gallowglass #IARTG

TwoQueensOfHeaven

The image above is a copy of the first mythology book I ever read, Two Queens of Heaven by Doris Gates. I often tell the story about how I read all the available children's books in my local library, and the beleaguered librarian directed me toward the mythology section so I'd have new stories to read. (Actually, first I made a brief foray into horror. When the librarian learned I'd checked out Stephen King's It  she went on a mission to find alternate and age-appropriate reading material. Oddly, I am not afraid of clowns.) It made sense that out of all the titles available, I picked the one about goddesses. I was eleven or twelve when this happened, an age somewhere between Disney princess and adolescent crushes, and the stories about Aphrodite and Demeter both entertained and intrigued me.

After I devoured this book I moved on to Bullfinch's Mythology (I have never shied away from a book just because it was several hundred pages of tiny font - nay, I accepted those challenges with honor!) and learned that cultures all across the globe had myths and legends just waiting to be discovered. I made it my personal mission to read all of them.

These stories fueled my imagination, and I started writing my own takes. I penned a version of Pygmalion where the statue becomes human and rebuffs her sculptor, another where Persephone sneaks away from her overbearing mother to shack up with Hades, and more Arthurian stories that I can count. Eventually, I started working on a retelling of Tam Lin, the Scottish tale where Janet rescues her lover from the Seelie Queen... And that story became Gallowglass.

Gallowglass is available now and has been getting rave reviews. If you've read it, I'd love to know what you think!

As promised, the excerpt is below. Be sure to let me know what you think!

 <<<>>>

Robert grabbed my arm. “’Tis one o’ the fuath,” he growled.
 “The who-ah?” I asked.
Foo ah,” Robert repeated, stretching out the syllables. “They are water demons that act as Nicnevin’s assassins. Like as no’, she has sent this one to collect me.”
“I thought you were her assassin.”
He ignored my comment, and said, “We must leave, lass. Fetch your brother.”
“Leave the tour?” I asked. “Can’t we just walk around to the other side of the ruin?”
“No. We must leave this place altogether.”
“We’re on an island,” I reminded him. “We have to wait for the ferry.”
“We canna,” he hissed. “’Tis no safe.”
“Um, okay.” I scanned the tour group; it was comprised of a rather harried looking guide, a gaggle of senior citizens armed with cameras and fanny packs, and my brother, the only individual under sixty. None of them looked to be likely candidates for a fairy assassin. “Where exactly is this fuath?”
“At the rear o’ that gathering.” Robert jerked his chin toward a white haired woman leaning on a cane who looked so frail, I worried the breeze would topple her.
“Are you sure?” I pressed.
“’Tis one o’ them, o’ that ye can be certain,” he insisted, his grip on my arm tightening. “The beast is wearing a glamour.”
I stared at Robert, the man I’d known for less than twenty four hours, who had claimed that I’d liberated him from centuries imprisoned within the Seelie Court. The man I had believed, until he started avoiding my questions. “You haven’t answered me. I thought you were her assassin?”
“I was but the deadliest of many,” he replied, then he spied Chris. “Come, we’ll collect Christopher and commandeer a vessel.”
“What? No!” I shook my arm free, and glared at him. “That little old lady can’t hurt anyone, and we are not stealing a boat!”
“The boat? Ye are concerned about a wee boat when a killer’s naught but twenty paces from ye?”
“This is insane,” I muttered. “Just insane.” I turned my back to him, rubbing my temples. Chris had been right; Robert was nothing but a gigolo, one who was now playing his part a bit too intensely, and I was his willing mark. I’d crossed half the world to get away from one man that had used me, only to run smack into another.
The tour group had noticed Robert’s and my argument, and a few of the old ladies were whispering about us. I smiled and waved, trying to impress upon them that everything was fine. The ladies lost interest in us, except the one Robert had labeled as an assassin. She was standing stock still, leaning on her cane and peering at me.
“Why isn’t she moving on?” I wondered. I glanced over my shoulder; Robert had stalked off toward the trees again, muttering to himself. “Robert, could you come here, please?” I called. “I think someone needs help.” All I could think of was that something of a medical nature was happening with the woman, maybe a stroke or a heart attack, and Robert—or whatever his name was—was a big guy, and could carry her if necessary. As soon as I called his name he returned to my side.
“Who is needin’ help, then?” Robert demanded. He looked past me, the blood draining from his face.
“Gallowglass,” a voice hissed. I tore my gaze from Robert and back to the old woman, who wasn’t looking so feeble any longer. Her eyes glowed red, and her mouth was packed with long, needlelike teeth, way too many teeth to be in such a small opening. I stood, mesmerized, as she kept opening her mouth, wider and wider until her jaw unhinged, her teeth growing longer and sharper with each passing second.
“Behind me,” Robert shouted as the woman sprang at us. She crossed the twenty or more paces in a single leap, landing like a cat on Robert’s chest. Then she screamed, a horrible, shrill noise that physically hurt my ears, and reared back to bite Robert’s neck.
I shrieked, certain this monster was about to take Robert’s head off, when he pitched himself forward, throwing his full weight on top of the much smaller creature and knocking them both to the ground. While the monster was still dazed, Robert leapt to his feet. He extended his arm to the side, and the claymore he’d carried the day before materialized out of thin air. Robert grasped the sword with both hands, and with a single swing he decapitated the creature.
I was shaking like a leaf, staring from the body to Robert. There was blood everywhere, black stinking blood marring the lush grass, some of the foul liquid having sprayed onto Robert’s chest. I hated gore, even the fake gore in horror movies and in cheesy Halloween displays. I swayed, certain that I was going to faint, when Robert caught me.
“’Tis all right,” he murmured, his arm about my waist. “It canna hurt ye now.” I pressed myself against Robert’s side, hiding under his arm and trying not to touch the bloody parts of his shirt. All of my doubts about Robert had ceased just as surely as that creature’s life had ceased. I would never doubt him again.
“What the holy hell was that?” Chris demanded.
I looked up and saw my brother jogging towards us. Behind him, the tour group was screaming and pointing at the man with the gigantic, bloody sword, and at the body at his feet. “Robert had to,” I whispered.
“Had to?” Chris repeated. “He had to kill a little old lady?
“Not a lady,” I said, shaking my head.
“Old man, whatever—”
“Chris!” I pointed at the creature’s head. “Look at the mouth.” He did, squatting down to get a better view. I stayed where I was; I already knew more than I wanted to know about that thing.
“Crap,” Chris murmured. Being that Chris considered such language beneath a man of his stature, I inferred that he understood the gravity of our situation. He reached toward its teeth, and I looked away. Did he have to touch it? He couldn’t tell just by looking at it that it was wrong? As I tried not to lose my breakfast I noticed an official-looking man striding toward us.
“About stealing that boat,” I began, then I turned to my brother. “Chris, we are going to steal a boat.”
Chris nodded. “Good plan.”
Robert grabbed my elbow, and we raced toward the dock.

Cover Reveal: Gallowglass #urbanfantasy #paranormalromance #new #amwriting @Bellatrix_Press

Karina didn’t set out to free the Seelie Queen’s gallowglass. Now she’ll do anything to keep him.

Preorder here: http://amzn.to/2oReLdB

Gallowglass will be available everywhere June 6, 2016.

Writer Wednesday: NaNo Check In, And Release Dates For Changing Fate And Gallowglass! #WriterWednesday #NaNoWriMo #goals #amwriting

It's Day 16 of NaNo! If you're writing your 1667 words per day (the minimum daily word count to stay on track to reach 50k by November 30), by now you have written 26,672 words.

My current word count is 16,998. I'm not exactly killing it this time around.

That low word count begs the question, what's going on? I win NaNo EVERY year. Usually, I hit the 50k mark around the three week mark, and gloat like a gloatasaurus rex all over the internet. To call this situation is perplexing is an understatement.

As for what's impeding my progress, a few things happened. I had to reevaluate the publishing timeline for my Parthalan series, and complete a massive re-edit ASAP. That took up the first week of November, which put me behind in my word count but moved my series forward. All in all, that was a good trade.

Having put out that fire, I got into my WIP...and right around the 6k mark, the plot went off the rails. It didn't deviate all that far, and it's definitely fixable. This story is one that I've wanted to write for years, and I will definitely see it completed. Could I fix it and still hit my 50k goal? Probably. But, then something happened.

Something kind of awesome.

Out of the blue, I was hit with the most fricken' amazing idea ever. It's a YA, and I never write YA, so that in itself is exciting. It takes place in Ireland, and there are mermaids and lost cities and surfing. I haven't had this much fun writing in years, and even though I'm 10k behind, I don't care. I am going to finish this story, and then I'm going to edit and revise it to perfection. Who cares if it doesn't hit 50k by November 30? No one, that's who.

My confidence is bolstered by the fact that my previous NaNo projects have fared well. My 2014 NaNo, Changing Teams, released last November, and the third in the series, Changing Fate, will release on March 28, 2017. And my 2013 project, Gallowglass, will release on June 6, 2017.

You read that right--GALLOWGLASS HAS A RELEASE DATE!!!

To sum up, keep working on your WIP, no matter where you are in your word count. To steal NaNo's motto, the word needs your novel.

Have you encountered some NaNo setbacks? How did you work around them? Tell us in the comments!

Teaser Tuesday, GALLOWGLASS edition

In reviewing my posts over the past few months, I realized that I've been mostly doing cover reveals and blog hops, promoting others rather than myself. Now, don't get me wrong; I believe in sharing the love with my fellow authors, and will continue to do so. I just need to balance helping them with helping me.

As a result of this new mindset, today I sent off my very first query for GALLOWGLASS, and I am so fricken' excited! A little background on this project: as you may or may not know, I've always been fascinated by Celtic myths and legends. A few years ago I stumbled onto the story of Robert Kirk, a seventeenth century minister who wrote a book called The Secret Commonwealth of Elves, Fauns and Fairies. (Check it out, it's a real book: https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/4168758-the-secret-commonwealth-of-elves-fauns-and-fairies

While taking a night time stroll around the fairy hill in 1692, Robert Kirk died, apparently from a stroke. Legend states that he didn't die, but that the fairies, outraged that he revealed their secrets, kidnapped him and imprisoned him in a tree atop the fairy hill. According to the rumors, he's still there today.

Holy crap, here was a real guy, who had not only written about his dealings with fairies, but was supposedly punished for doing so. And he died on a fairy hill! Seriously, you can't make this stuff up.

So, I started making stuff up about him, what had he been doing, had he really just been standing there in a tree, did he even remember his time as a reverend? And, what would happen if he was set free?

Below is the query I sent out for GALLOWGLASS, the latest step in a project that I've been working on for over five years. I'm excited, proud, nervous...but most of all, I'd like to know what you think? Would you read it?

Here it is, the fairy hill where it all began
What would you do if you’d crossed an entire ocean to get away from your problems, only to run smack dab into the Fairy Queen’s personal assassin?

Desperate to escape a recent heartbreak, Karina Stewart accepted a research grant in the UK to work on her doctoral thesis. Along for the ride is her brother, Chris, who had been a best-selling author until his ex-fiancée sued him for plagiarism. Karina’s research brings them to Aberfoyle, Scotland, where local legend claims that seventeenth century minister Robert Kirk was kidnapped by fairies. Quite by accident, Karina frees Reverend Kirk.

Robert tells Karina that he spent the last few hundred years not as a prisoner, but as the Fairy Queen’s gallowglass, a mercenary cum assassin. Despite her brother’s warnings, Karina lets Robert accompany them on their tour of Scotland. After they’re attacked by demons sent to retrieve Robert, Karina realizes that the Fairy Queen will do anything to reclaim Robert. Only, Karina doesn’t want to let him go.

Teaser Tuesday - GALLOWGLASS

Today's teaser is rom my WIP, Gallowglass. Our heroine, Karina Stewart, is about to unleash something from the Otherworld. Read on...

“I can’t believe you’re dragging me to another old rock.”

I shot my older brother a glare; I was really starting to regret offering to bring him along on this trip. “It’s not an old rock. It’s a church. A kirk.” I would have said more, but I needed to concentrate. This driving on the wrong side of the road business was for the birds.

“Kirk,” he repeated, rolling the word around in his mouth. “And, what are ‘kirks’ made of?”

I scowled at him, almost went into a ditch, and jerked the car back onto the road. “Chris, do you have to be such a jerk all the time?”

“Rina, do you have to be such a bad driver?”

“Stop drinking all that complimentary Scotch, and you can do the driving.”

“When in Rome.”

He had a point there. Nearly every place we’d visited in Scotland either had few samples of the local whisky laid out for us, or a proprietor with a handy flask. Add this to all the pubs we’d visited in Britain, and my liver was starting to ache.

“Besides,” Chris continued, “if I was driving, you wouldn’t get to drag me to every known fairy sighting.”

“You liked Stirling.” My brother is a literature professor, with a doctorate in Shakespeare. He’d wandered the halls of the old castle, randomly quoting the Scottish play. Beyond Lady Macbeth’s demons, his feet were firmly grounded in reality. By contrast, I’d always been fascinated by stories about magic and fairies. I’d jumped at the chance to do some of my geology grad work in the UK, so I could tour the locations I’d read and imagined about since childhood.

“At least real people lived there,” he smirked as we pulled into the car park. “What kind of ghosts are in this kirk again?”

“No ghosts.” I pulled up the emergency brake, and jammed my water bottle into my daypack. “There was a reverend here in the seventeenth century who communed with fairies and elves.” Chris gave me a look over the roof of the car, raising a single eyebrow. That had always irritated me, since I’d never been able to do that. “He wrote a book telling everyone their secrets, and the fairies imprisoned him in a tree.”

“Anyone can write a book,” Chris grumbled. “I’ve written several.”

I bit my lip; Chris had just enough midgrade liquor in him to be itching for a fight, and anything I said about his crumbling career would just add fuel to the fire. After a few moments of silence, Chris wandered over to the Plexiglas encased signage, carefully positioned to catch a tourist's eye.

“Did you get a pamphlet about this place?” he called over his shoulder.

“Yeah.” I rooted around in my daypack, and pulled out the wad of information supplied by Spiritual Sites of the UK, the tour group I’d contacted. I was so glad I’d opted for the cheaper, self-guided package. I’d hate for any hapless tour guide to be saddled with by brother’s foul attitude for six days, seven nights.

I pulled out a slightly rumpled pamphlet and handed it over. Chris opened it, scanning the paragraph’s with an English professor’s ease. “This guy wasn’t taken by fairies!” Chris said. “He had a stroke while he was walking around the hill.”

“You know where the term stroke comes from?” Without waiting for his smart-ass reply, I continued, “It was thought that a fairy had stroked your cheek. That’s why only one side was paralyzed.”

“Thank god for modern medicine,” Chris muttered. We reached the remains of the kirk, and headed toward the graveyard. Chris might think I was a loon, but he admitted that gravestones were cool. “Look, he’s buried right here. Case closed.”

I walked over to where Chris was standing, and read the inscription. After a suitable moment of silence, I mentioned that we should climb the fairy hill.

“We’re here, so we might as well,” I said when he whined. “Besides, the walk will burn off some of that booze.” He grumbled, but followed anyway.

The tree at the top of the fairy hill was, in a word, magnificent. It was old and stately, like a Scottish version of Yggsdrasil, and prayers, printed on colored bits of cloth, were tied to the branches. More offerings surrounded the roots, and shiny coins were pounded into the bark.

“Some walk,” I grumbled, digging in my pack for my water bottle. The water was warm, but it was better than nothing.

“So, he’s in here, huh?” Chris leaned close to the trunk, and picked at a coin. “Why hasn’t anyone tried to chop it down, set the poor guy loose?”

I shrugged. “To keep from angering the fairies?”

Chris barked a derisive laugh. “Yeah. Or, they don’t want to kill this golden goose of a tourist trap.” I glanced around; Disneyland, this was not. “This stuff is all so lame, Rina. I don’t know what you see in all these bedtime stories.”

I fingered one of the cloth prayers. “They remind us of where we came from, where we’re going. They’re comforting.”

Another bark. I think Chris had had more whisky than he’d let on. “Comforting? That’s your explanation for this crap—that it’s comforting?”

“Of course,” I said, trying to keep my voice even. The booze would wear off soon enough. I hoped. “Why would people keep doing all of this-” I gestured at the tree, all of the flapping bits of cloth prayers and offerings “-if no one ever got anything out of it?”

Chris looked from me to the tree. “If all this goddamn magic shit is real, why is my life over?” he ground out. “You think I didn’t pray for an answer? A solution? You know what I got? Nothing. Because there’s nothing to get.”

He turned and stalked down the hill, over toward where we’d left the car. I watched him until he disappeared around a curve, then I turned back to the tree.

“Don’t worry,” I said, patting the rough bark. “I believe in you, Reverend Kirk. I know what really happened. And, I’d rescue you if I could.”
